Child’s right to identity in assisted reproductive technology
We are pleased to relay the following announcement :
Assisted reproductive technology, including recourse to surrogacy, is increasingly being used for family formation. Children born through these methods have the same rights as all children under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
However, the human rights of children born through these methods are at risk of multiple violations, particularly their rights to identity (Article 8 CRC) and to not be sold according to the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography (OPSC). When a child is missing identity information and/or their identity is sold, this can have a lifelong impact of a legal, medical and/or psychosocial nature.
Leading experts as well as persons with lived experiences will provide food for thought and recommendations on how to uphold the child’s right to identity.
This symposium is set up as a hybrid event – webinar to ensure greatest possible access where a link will be sent to all participants beginning of September – physical meeting for a limited number of participants, to facilitate exchanges and networking. Registrations for the physical meeting will be confirmed in late August depending on the Swiss authorities response to the pandemic via email. As such those planning to attend physically are encouraged to make bookings where cancellation is possible free of cost.
